Responsible Gambling
Gambling involves risk and no strategy removes it. Every bonus on this site is a commercial offer
designed to increase how much you play, and the arithmetic we publish is there so you can see the
size of that commitment before you accept it.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Depositing more than you decided to, or returning to a limit you set in order to raise it.
- Playing to recover a loss rather than because you wanted to play.
- Gambling with money committed to something else, or borrowing to fund it.
- Hiding the amount or the time from people close to you.
- Relief rather than enjoyment when a session ends, or irritation when it is interrupted.
- Chasing a wagering requirement you no longer want to finish just to release a balance.
Any one of these on its own is worth a pause. Several together is worth using the tools below
today rather than after the next session.
Tools that take effect immediately
- Deposit limits
- Set a daily, weekly or monthly cap in the account settings. Increases normally take effect only
after a cooling-off period while decreases apply at once, which is the asymmetry you want. Set this
when you open the account, not when you need it.
- Loss and wager limits
- Caps on net loss or total stake over a period. More useful than a deposit limit if you tend to
recycle winnings rather than deposit repeatedly.
- Session reminders and time limits
- An on-screen reminder of elapsed time and net position. Blunt, and effective precisely because
it interrupts.
- Cooling-off
- A short lock, typically 24 hours to six weeks, that suspends play but keeps the account. The
right tool when you want to break a pattern rather than close things down.
- Self-exclusion
- A long or permanent block on the account, usually six months upward, which cannot be reversed
during the period. Marketing must stop as well. Use this rather than cooling-off if the decision is
not provisional.
One thing specific to offshore operators
National self-exclusion registers do not reach operators licensed outside your country. If you
have registered with a scheme in your own jurisdiction, an operator licensed in Malta or Curacao is
not connected to it and your exclusion will not block an account there.
That matters more than any bonus on this site. If you signed up to a national scheme for a
reason, that reason has not changed because the licence did, and these pages are not the right ones
for you. Self-exclusion has to be set with each operator individually, and it is worth doing that
before you open an account rather than after.
Free confidential help
All of these are independent of any operator and none of them will ask you to pay.
- BeGambleAware at begambleaware.org, with a free 24-hour helpline and live chat.
- Gambling Therapy at gamblingtherapy.org, multilingual support and moderated forums
across Europe.
- Gamblers Anonymous, peer meetings in most European countries, in person and online.
- GamCare at gamcare.org.uk for treatment and structured support.
- Your national helpline, which will usually be listed by your country's gambling
authority or health service.
If someone else's gambling is the problem, Gam-Anon and the family services attached to the
organisations above are for you specifically.
Protecting people who should not be playing
Gambling is for adults aged 18 or over, and in some jurisdictions 21. Operators are required to
verify age and identity. If you share a device, blocking software such as Gamban, BetBlocker or
Netnanny will stop access at the device level, which is more reliable than relying on account
settings alone.
